Prepare Your New Home For Winter

Prepare Your New Home For Winter

Dec 8, 2020

We may be biased, but we think there’s no place as beautiful as Alabama, especially in the wintertime. Throughout our peaceful, private communities, surrounded by sprawling greenery and charming towns, the festive winter season is nothing short of magical. Before you head out to enjoy all of the recreation and fun outside your door — from hiking and biking to holiday shopping and dining — make sure to go through a quick checklist of ways to prepare your home for the new season. Here’s an easy reference for you to use:

Outside of Your Home

  • Clean gutters to prepare for freezing/thawing

  • Check for leaks in windows and roofs

  • Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors with weather-stripping and caulk

  • Repair damaged roof shingles

  • Stock up on seasonal essentials like salt and ice melt

  • Turn off exterior water and sprinklers

  • Close shut-off valves, then open the outside faucet to drain the line

  • Fix damaged walkways and steps

  • Store remaining outdoor furniture and children’s toys

Inside of Your Home

  • Have the furnace inspected by a professional and replace filters

  • Clean dryer vents

  • Make sure the fireplace is thoroughly inspected

No matter how you plan on enjoying the winter, there are a few things you can do to ensure that no surprises interrupt your best moments. After a day out exploring the wonders of your neighborhood and beyond, you’ll return to a home that’s safe and sound, with all of that winter coziness you know and love.

From all of us at Stone Martin Builders, happy early winter!
